WASHINGTON, DC – A growing number of Hispanics in Florida are exercising parental choice in education, while test scores of Hispanic children have risen across the board in the state. As the application process for the Step Up for Students program, an initiative of the state’s Corporate Tax Credit (CTC) scholarship program, prepares for the 2008-09 school year, the Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Options is working to inform more families about the benefits of the program and how to apply.

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Options announced the hiring of Anthony J. Colón, a widely recognized leader in education reform, as its interim president. Colón, who brings to the organization nearly 30 years of experience in designing school choice programs for special needs and underserved students, will assume the role brought to national prominence by Rebeca Nieves Huffman during her five-year tenure.

WASHINGTON, DC – In the State of the Union, President George Bush called for a Pell Grants for Kids program, which would provide $300 million in scholarships for tens of thousands of low-income children in low-performing or failing schools to attend a private or religious school of their parents’ choice. The Hispanic Council for Reform and Educational Options expressed its support for the program, but also warns that much more will need to be done to curtail the nation’s growing dropout rates.
